Walls, Beautiful Walls!

February 29, 2012

Well folks, we have drywall! It's hasn't been mudded yet, but the bathroom is starting to feel like a room again.

With this being our only bathroom AND our laundry room, we're feeling a little bit of pressure to get it finished sooner rather than later. Because of that, we're doing fewer things ourselves than we plan to do for the rest of the house. Our friend hung the drywall, we're hiring someone to do the mudding, and we'll probably have our friend do the tiling, too, because he'll be able to lay things out in no time. Mike and I both work full time, and it'd be nice to be able to shower and do our laundry at home again sometime soon! The kitchen has also been totally out of commission while we're renovating, so home cooked meals will be a bonus...

I'm sorry for the picture quality - the only light we have in the bathroom right now is a crummy old lamp, and it's been darkish by the time I get a chance to get in there with the camera.

Looking into the bathroom, you can see the side of the laundry closet. When the room is finished, our new turtle tank and aquarium stand will be in the corner. We're going to be gaining a ton of natural light through the window we're putting in on the right. Immediately to the left of the door to the bathroom is the tub alcove, but nothing has been done in there yet (still waiting for the drain to be plumbed).

I'm so excited to swap out these DIY roman shades for cafe curtains - so much more light is going to be able to stream in! Up until now that shade has always been drawn all the way to the bottom (and as soon as I'm home and the guys aren't working anymore, it comes back down). I'm also really looking forward to a new window that doesn't allow snow flakes to blow onto me while I'm...busy (true story). You can see the placement of the fan and ceiling light in the above picture, too.

There's a ton of room to be able to get to the toilet, even though we really broke up the room with a tub alcove and a laundry closet.

bathroom sconce wall light wiring placement

We waffled a bit on the placement of our mirror and wall sconces - I'm certain that they'll be fine where we wired them. The cut out to the left is to accommodate a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet, and two switches. One switch will be to the fan, and the other will be to the sconces (we're planning on putting in a motion sensor switch for the sconces to make sure they really do get turned off when no one's in the bathroom). Running electrical through exterior walls like ours is not easy, so we chose to avoid it. Placing the switches for the fan and sconces here is the only way we could adhere to our local code (a switch can't be within 1.5 meters of a bathtub or shower - or at least not be easily accessible from the tub or shower).

There's no drywall on this end of the room because we decided that we might as well extend the subway tile that we're doing in the tub alcove all the way out to the door, and even above the door. I think it will give the end product a more seamless look.

So that's where we're at!

On a totally unrelated note, I started thinking about my blog's "brand" last night. More specifically, I was thinking about a name change. Not a big one, just a little one: "Farm House Dreams". I love the fact that we live in a farm house. I love that we live rurally. I love that we have the ability to produce a lot of our own veggies, make maple syrup, keep bees and chickens. In addition to all of the renovation, restoration, and decoration...I dream of having a little hobby farm one day, too.

Should I change my blog's name to encompass my hobby farming aspirations, or is there room for those dreams under the umbrella of the current title?

I'm interested in knowing what you think. I hope a lot of my readers will participate in the poll I've set up in my side bar (just under the social media icons at the top). I'd also really like to encourage some of my quiet regular readers (and of course new readers!) to say hello in the comments! Don't be a stranger. :)

Farm House Dreams sounds awesome!

Are you keeping bees yet? Anywho, you might enjoy the book "Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer." It's obviously about inner-city farming, but I've loved reading about this gal's attempts at keeping bees and poultry.

Not yet, but I hope to by Spring 2013? Once the bathroom is done we're going to have to be in wedding planning and saving mode (our date is February 23, 2013), so hobby farming dreams are just dreams for now!

Thanks for the book recommendation! Going to try and track it down on my Kindle tonight.
Bees? totes jealous. I love the little suckers and wish we had space to keep some (even though I know absolutely nothing about beekeeping) to help bolster the declining honey bee population (as well as have fresh, delicious honey on hand). I grew up on a converted hobby farm (my parents were more wildlife-conservationists than farmers) and have always wanted to have a 'hobby' farm of my own with some chickens and maybe a few other animals.

Your blog is still fairly young, so I don't think that changing the name will be too much of a 'consumer upset' in regards to branding. One of the reasons I went with my blog name was because it encompasses so much of what we are currently doing and plan to do, from gardening & landscaping to renovating & decorating and eventually building in the future, and it didn't really 'limit' me to one set thing. For example if I had gone with "Our Modern Cottage" or something like that, it would be a fairly fixed 'brand' or niche that I would be working with.

I suggest writing down everything that comes to mind when you think of your home, your projects, blog and goals -- even single words that may seem completely unrelated, just brainstorm in a stream-of-consciousness manner on a page and then play with the words and ideas that you have.

Farm House Dreams is great, not knocking it, but don't feel constrained by trying to keep the flow similar to the original working title. You never know you might end up stumbling onto a name that you adore that is totally different than what you're working with now, or you might find that none of your other ideas "fit."

Good luck, it's your blog call what you like! :)

Thank you for such wonderful advice! I'm totally impulsive and anxious and as soon as I got this thought in my head I was convinced that I had to change it RIGHT NOW!

You're right - my blog is a baby so my wee following shouldn't get too upset by a change, haha. I'm kicking myself for starting a Facebook page, though...ha!
I can be extremely impulsive too, it's hard when new ideas can be so darn exciting. As for the facebook page, cross that bridge when you get to it. If and when you rename the blog, I'm sure a re-direct to a new page will be easy & well responded to. :)

I don't use FB, so there might be a way to rename your page (though I am not sure on that) . Someone out there has got to be FB savvy and have a tutorial up somewhere. ;)

Hey Ashley,

I kinda felt prombted to say hello! :o)
I always enjoy reading your posts, especially regarding your (soon to be)lovley house, of course. Though I almost check in daily, i haven't commented untill now, mainly, because it takes forever to translate what i want to say! (I am from germany) However, though i really belive that all dreams could also be explored under your current blog-name, I really think you should change it, if that is a desire of you. After all it is your blog! And i come here for inspiration from you and not the title. So if this really is on the bottom of your heart, go ahead, we'll still be here! Actually I would be delighted to see you progress onto farming!
Hope you didn't mind my ramplings and it wasn't all confusing!

Hi Jenifer,

I'm so glad you decided to comment (and I think your English is great!). Your words are very encouraging to keep on writing and doing what I'm doing - thank you!

I don't think it would hurt to change your name, but I do think you should think it over!
I am excited also to live in the country when the house is finished this year, I grew up a country girl and can't wait to not have my shades drawn all the time like I do since we live in town town!

MMM growing your own veggies sounds fab and yummy!

I grew up in the city but always, always wanted to live in the country.

I've never grown anything before so it's a total experiment, haha.
YAYYYYY for progress!!!

Looks like your bathroom is coming along great! Farm House Dreams sounds nice and it might work better later in the future. It is your first home so first home dreams works but it also makes me think that it's just your temporary or "5 year plan" home whereas from the sounds of it, its more of a forever home for you. Also adding the farm in there might attract some more readers who are interested in reading about farming and country life. Just my two cents : )

You make a really good point about "First Home Dreams" sounding like a starter house or "5 year plan". Thanks for the input, Christine!
You've made a lot of progress! It's still hard for me to envision, so I can't wait to actually see this room take form lol

We had toyed with the idea of doing some storage above the tub/shower, and take advantage of the high ceilings, but decided it would feel too boxed in (well for Mike, not me, since I'm only 5 feet).
Thought I should introduce myself. I have an old brick house too, and I think I found you through Old House Web. The "First" in your blog name might have attracted me, because it's our first too, but the pictures hooked me. I'll be hanging around whether "First" or "Farm" or something else wins out. Sometimes it's just really comforting to see someone else's floor joists and plaster and lathe. I don't have a house blog, but there are pictures of our projects here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kaitschott/sets/7215...

Hi Kait! Thanks so much for commenting. I'll definitely be taking a look at your pictures!
Great concept! Walls of our home can be decorated in a unique way. Moreover, it adds value to a property, especially if you are looking forward to sell it in future.

Maximum professional development is important to build confidence in career. Teachers should practice more for sharing positive knowledge with students. They must keep in mind the needs of the students.
