Curtain Conundrum

February 22, 2012

Slow and steady wins the race, right?

Although, to be perfectly honest, I don't think we're going all that slowly considering all that we had/have to do to our bathroom. We only started tearing things out a week ago.

While I was at work, Mike and his Dad got the tub alcove and laundry closet framed out. They also got a great start on a bunch of the wiring (for the sconces, washer/dryer, fan, ceiling light, and outlets). Apparently, whirlpool tubs just plug in and you don't have to hard wire them. This was excellent news.

Unfortunately, work is now at a little bit of a standstill. Mike is away for training for work until Friday.  While he's gone, though, there's a lot that I can do on my lonesome. I'm going to get the kitchen as cleaned up as I can (considering all of the stuff that's everywhere!), and hopefully get going on stripping the original four panel bathroom door. I can't wait to see it all fixed up with the restored cast iron rimlock!

But, on to topics related to the title of this post!

While I love my no-sew roman shades that are currently in the bathroom (yes, even during the reno as a commenter pointed out in the last post!), they just aren't a great solution for the room. Because the window is right beside the toilet, and is only 24" from the floor (actually, it's higher now that all of the hundred million layers of flooring are gone), the shades have to be drawn all of the time.

We live quite rurally, so privacy isn't that big of an issue, but I'd still prefer to have a bit of fabric covering our behinds, if you know what I mean. But (pun!), I want something that lets in more unfiltered light.

My solution?

Cafe curtains. I know they're not everyone's cup of tea, but I think they'll be a great fit for this window.

My dilemma?

Whether or not to keep the same fabric that I have now. It's outdoor fabric, and while it worked great for roman shades (where it stayed pretty much flat), I'm not sure it'll be great for cafe curtains - I think it will be too stiff.

Does anyone out there have experience with cafe curtains? Is lighter fabric better? Or do you think I'm nuts for getting rid of what's already there?

I love the cafe curtain idea. I have a small window on the top of our front door that needs some sort of covering badly, but it's such a strange shape. Cafe curtains would totally do the trick!

I bet they would! I think you can also get light filtering stick on stuff...I've seen some of it at Home Depot that doesn't look too bad.
I think cafe curtains would be lovely. I have the same kind of dilemma in my bathroom, but decided on blinds that can both pull up from the bottom as well as drop down from the top. They were a little pricey, but they work well. The other idea would be white shutters on the bottom half of the window. Good luck with your reno! Kerri, A Pop of Pretty xo

Those blinds sound fanastic! I've thought about shutters, as well, but I'm such a cheapy that I'd try to make my own and it'd look terrible, haha!
Stripping and staining woodwork is one of my favorite home reno tasks. Do you know what type of wood you are dealing with? Do you use a heat gun or a chemical stripper? As far as the curtains, will the cafe style give you enough privacy?......or is that just an issue for us city gals :) I guess you have acreage so you don't have to worry about a neighbor peering in.

I'm fairly certain that the door is pine, but it's unbelievably heavy so oak isn't really out of the question, either. I started using my heat gun outside, but the air temperature was so cold that the paint gummed up again so fast that it made scraping a real pain. I started working on it inside last night, but I'm not totally comfortable using the heat gun inside, so I stuck with chemical stripper. We bought really cheap stuff that sucks, but I used up the last of it anyway. Planning on buying something a little better today.

As for privacy...we only really need something for the odd time that the field around us is being combined or someone is doing work outside!
Thanks! I'm sorry I didn't reply sooner - my spam filter went on a rampage. :(
Love the idea of cafe curtains! I used an outdoor fabric for our living room curtains (you can see them here http://casa-de-christine.blogspot.com/2012/01/fre... and while they are a thicker curtain they still seem to hang okay although they are full height curtains. A lighter fabric would probably be best for cafe curtains I think.

I used some of that peel and stick window film for our bathroom window but we needed the privacy aspect. I quite love how it turned out and it was inexpensive (see it here- http://casa-de-christine.blogspot.com/2011/08/win.... Just as another option

Thanks for the links, Christine! I'll check them out.
I love the roman shades! But if privacy isnt a big deal I'd go for the curtains!

I love them too, it just annoys me having to have them closed all of the time!
I love cafe curtains. They would be nice and light and flowy for your new bathroom. Looking forward to seeing it!

I agree with the other commenters. I think care curtains are a great solution! I think the outdoor fabric would be fine and hold it's shape really well.

I'll definitely have to try it out, since I really do love the bold pattern of this fabric.
I love your idea of using cafe curtains. :) Oh, and I think that you're making great progress with the bathroom project. You're definitely not slow!

Thanks Sarah! Sometimes it feels slow, but then I go...wait a minute....look at where we started!
I really like the idea of cafe curtains in that space! I think the styles and prints you're looking at will be really cute!
