Lights, Lights, Lights!

January 30, 2012

It's Monday again!

Before getting to the topic of the post, I want to point out a few changes that I made over the weekend.

I'm participating in a Build a Better Blog in 31 Days challenge/workshop put on by The SITS Girls. I'm learning so much and meeting and discovering new blogs every day. Some of the changes around here have resulted from daily tasks from that challenge/workshop.

Before and After - a new page with easy access to before and afters. The links are listed by room. Most of you know that we don't actually have a finished room yet, so content is pretty limited for now!

Tutorials - this page existed before, but I decided to publish tutorials as their own post, and then list the links on this page (you might have noticed that I published two over the weekend). What I had before was far too tedious!

Inspiration Station - my version of a "blog roll".

What I'm most excited about are my new social media icons at the top of the sidebar. It took way too long, but I finally figured out how to do it. The icons are courtesy of Icons, etc. I'm sad that they don't have a Pinterest icon, but no biggie.

Now, on to more talk about lights!

On Friday, I showed off my top picks for the sconces that will be on either side of the oval mirror. We decided to go with this guy (ordered 2 of them last night - free shipping, too!):

In addition to the sconces, we also need an overhead light. The original 1950's era - that's when the house first got electricity - light base is currently there, but the shade (as well as the shades for all of the other original light fixtures) is long gone. It's also not centered in the room. We're rewiring while all the framing is exposed, so it'll be easy to relocate the fixture on the ceiling. I'm pretty undecided about what I'd like to see up there. Pendant or flush mount? Neither one of us is interested in a chandelier.

I've scoured Home Depot's website, as well as Overstock.com and Canadian Lighting Universe, and we just can't find something that we love. I'm crazy about school house lights, but Mike...not so much. Perhaps we'll actually get our butts into town and take a look in store sometime soon.

More updates coming Wednesday!

Lights are such a big deal. You think you would be able to just be like, oh I like that one and buy it, but it requires so much thought! Lighting can make or break a space. I am in LOVE with your sconce choices, and I'm leaning towards the first pendant. Can't wait to see what you pick!

"...but it requires so much thought!"

Especially because lighting is so FLIPPING expensive!!
Oh my gosh. I have three of the rejuvanation lights (that exact brand) hanging in my kitchen. We plan to replace them with something more fitting for a Tudor when we get to the kitchen......but the sooner the better! Do you want to buy them? I will give you a deal ! SO serious. I could take them down and ship them this weekend. They might be in the kitchen photos on the "tour" page of my blog. Let me know!

Ah! That would be amazing. I'll have to talk it over with Mike, though, because as I said in the post....he's not so crazy about the school house style. I'll shoot you an e-mail when we decide!
Hi Ashley
Found your blog through Shannon's - just wanted to say "hi" and that I love the lights you featured here.
I'm from Ontario too, and I'll be your newest follower :)

Thanks Janet! I'm popping over to take a peek at your blog now. :)
I'm looking for schoolhouse lights too, and I feel like I'm totally striking out! I actually found some at Home Depot that I liked, but they were online only and charging $50 per light to ship them. Ugh. Thanks but no thanks. Good luck with your search!!

Ach! Shipping can be ridiculous!
Hi- found your blog through Amy's at Buffalo Roam. I am from Ontario too so yours stood out to me. I just wanted to let you know that I think Pinterest supplies buttons to link to your account. I stumbled on them the other day but haven't figured out how to add them to my blog yet. It takes me awhile to figure this coding thing out. lol. Looking forward to following along!

Pinterest does! It's on their "Goodies" page (you can see one example at the top of my side bar). http://pinterest.com/about/goodies/

Figuring out how to put one at the bottom of every post, every time, automatically, took a little more googling, but I got it now, too.

Looking forward to checking out your blog! Thanks for popping by. :)
If you'd like a schoolhouse style light (plain, in chrome) you can probably make your own for under 50$.

Places like Home Depot carry "pendant light kits" and many lighting parts (canopies, chain, sockets, shade holders, and shades). It's just a matter of picking out the individual components you like, and then matching them together. Pretty much all the parts just screw together.

Pieces like the last three you posted could be assembled from parts (and look just as good) for at least half the price.

Thanks for the tips, JC! I knew that Ikea carried "pendant light kits", but didn't know Home Depot likely does too.
